Outreachy & CHAOSS

For the past 3 months, I have been working on building the Internalization and Localization roadmap for CHAOSS Diversity & Inclusion Badging as an Outreachy intern.

Internalization and Localization are means of adapting a particular framework, software, or file to different languages, regional peculiarities, and technical requirements of a target locale. It is the process of designing an application so that it can be adapted to various languages and regions without engineering changes. Localization happens when the particular file, applications is being translated into various languages, adding locale-specific components hence making it multilingual.

My project work is aimed at making the process of obtaining badges for events & projects multilingual. The integration of multiple languages will help streamline the Badging process to be more simplified and flexible thereby making the process quick and easy-to-follow.

During the first 2 months, I reviewed four different translation platforms, integrated, tested its processes, and features on each of them to know the best platform(S) that will be suitable for CHAOSS i18n.

Five important factors were considered in choosing the best platform.
1. Pricing.
2. Version Control Integration.
3. User-friendly Interface
4. Moderators review
5. Continuous translation Management

Below are the different platforms I analyzed.

After analyzing these platforms with the five important factors listed above, Locize and GitLocalize were the most preferred.

  • The Locize platform is a modern and affordable localization management solution. It has a lot of great features like:

1. Affordable pricing, The pricing plan for Locize is cost-effective as it is dependent upon the usage of the organization so you do not have to pay a steep price every month. It has the best pricing plan so far compared to the others, starts at $5.00/month. It also has a 14-day trial to test all features.

2. Multiple File management, locize assists you in managing different files per project at once.

3. Organized Translation Projects, locize assists you in organizing your project even after your original translation is done.

4. Direct, definite, and easy to follow user interface.

5. Smart translation memory, Continuous translation management, and versioning.

6. Faster updates and streamlined Localization process.

A major feature about the Locize platform is its affordable pricing.

  • Gitlocalize is a Translation service tool used for GitHub repo. It is a continuous localization tool built for teams who want to improve and streamline their project workflow when translating their content. GitLocalize automatically syncs with your Github repository so your workflow can be maintained and integrated on Github.

Gitloclize platform has awesome components and features:

1. GithubLocalize is completely free, this feature makes it easier for the user to integrate a lot of projects

2. Projects can easily be integrated with Github when synced with the repo, it tracks changes in the repository and pulls them into the projects which are synced back to the repo (branch) via a pull request.

3. Organized teamwork using GitLocalize. Moderators can be assigned to the project that needs to be translated, review the languages, and drop feedback. They can also discuss changes the same way it is implemented on Github.

4. Language moderators and admins can be assigned to approve translations contributed by applicants, contributors, reviewers, and translators.

Gitlocalize platform has a lot of extended functionality which can be integrted into CHAOSS GitHub repo. It is totally free, fully supports version control Integration. It is the best platform that was selected for CHAOSS Internalization and Localization.

I want to thank my mentors (Matt Snell, Matt Germonprez, Saleh Abdel Motaal) for their support during my Internship.

I wrote an extended report on each of the translation platforms here. In this report, I integrated a lot of features, wrote a detailed process on each of the processes involved and how they were integrated.

I also recorded the translation process using GitLocalize here.

You Can Also Contribute. The Chaoss I18n framework has been undergoing a lot of changes lately. We welcome anyone who wishes to contribute to its development. Its GitHub repository can be found here.
